Royston Town were left frustrated as a dramatic late twist saw them held to a 1-1 draw by Bromsgrove Sporting at Garden Walk, a result that does little to ease either side’s relegation concerns.
In perfect spring conditions, the visitors started brightly and threatened early on when George Wynne fired over from a well-worked corner on seven minutes. Royston responded quickly, and strong penalty appeals were waved away when skipper Adam Murray was pulled down in the box.
The Crows made their breakthrough on 12 minutes as Ollie Stephenson fired in a superb right-footed effort into the far corner after good work from Kian Harness. It was a deserved lead, and Royston looked the more dangerous. Despite a scrappy spell, Bromsgrove created half-chances, forcing Reuben Rabstein into action, while Luke Softley blazed over.
Royston ended the half strongly but couldn’t extend their lead, going in 1-0 up at the break.
The second half lacked rhythm, though both sides had opportunities. Harvey Beckett’s header flashed across goal, while Bromsgrove’s Billy Shaw squandered a clear chance from close range. Royston pushed for a second, with Harness and James Brighton both going close.
However, controversy struck deep into stoppage time. After an inexplicable six added minutes, a late penalty was awarded following an off-the-ball incident, with Beckett subsequently sent off. Luke Benbow converted to snatch a point for Bromsgrove.
It was a bitter blow for Royston, who were left wondering how all three points slipped away.
