Town Vets finally ran out comfortable winners in their first game of the season but opponents Guilden Morden produced a spirited display in an entertaining game on Sunday.
Town enjoyed the best of early exchanges and created some good chances but were foiled by a series of great saves by the Morden ‘keeper. The deadlock was broken after 15 minutes when John Moulding crossed into the box and Adam Smith crashed in a right foot volley to give Town the lead.
The visitors equalised almost immediately when indecision in defence allowed a Morden forward in to beat ‘keeper Simon Dobson.
Town continued to create openings and deservedly took the lead again when Paul Lewis found Kevin Barthrop in space and he made no mistake to put Town 2-1 ahead. Barthrop then converted again to give Town a 3-1 lead at half-time.
The long accurate passes from midfielder Mark Saggers were a feature of the second half and as the opponents defence became stretched more chances were created for Town’s forwards. Paul Lewis deservedly put Town further ahead but Morden reduced the arrears to 2-4 following a period of sustained pressure on Town’s defence.
Barthrop and Lewis missed a couple of good chances but Lewis notched again in the last five minutes to give Town a 5-2 victory.
