The Colts match report may lack a few fine details this week as yours truly took on linesman duties this morning which is just as well really, considering the result was not exactly one we’d have all hoped for.
     After last weeks win at Biggleswade, confidence throughout the squad would have been high going into the game against division two bottom side, Stortford Swifts, but once again, the Colts were up against it from the off with just ten players available for the match. On a relatively narrow, quagmire of a pitch the boys fought hard and despite going one nil down after twenty minutes to a freak, somewhat flukey goal that seemed to trickle in past the defenders and keeper in slow motion, you always felt a Colts goal or two was on the cards. After a few missed chances up front, the equaliser came just before half time when Stan’s pass found Ed in space in the home teams area and with his favoured left foot, he was able to convert the chance to level the scores.
   With the conceded goal aside, the three Royston defenders, Josh Cook, George and Evan were looking very comfortable at the back all morning, winning pretty much every challenge and every header that they had to deal with. Charlie made a couple of good saves on the odd occasion the home side did break through but in the latter stages of the game, the Swifts broke down the right and a shot from a narrow angle somehow looped into the Colts net and against the run of play, Royston found themselves 2-1 down, and that’s how it stayed.
    It was one of those all too familiar stories today when all ten Colts players worked hard and played some decent football but we just didn’t get the rub of the green at all. Roy and Andy looked a little stunned by this result as they complimented the boys on a gallant effort and Evan Till took away the man of the match trophy for his very solid performance in the centre of defence.
   The Colts have slipped to fifth in division two now and it’s St David’s away up next for the boys, a side rapidly catching us up. We always seem to play well against them but they are no doubt a real bogey team for us. Our luck is definitely due to change for the better though so if we can field a full team, stay illness and injury free, get the rub of the green and convert the odd half chance against St David’s, next week will surely be OUR week!
