Ultimately Royston would have been disappointed only to claim a draw against old foes Biggleswade Town, having seemingly done the hard work in the first half, when they were kicking up the hill into a stiff wind.

With the slope and wind in their favour the Waders started quickly, pinning Royston back to the edge of their box. The Crows at this point were being overrun and out battled as a large Biggleswade side moved the ball quickly and accurately around the pitch. Their blistering start was rewarded in the 7th minute as home skipper Connor Hall struck a low drive into the corner of the net, with the away team not reacting to the danger at all.

Biggleswade continued to press but Royston gradually began to get a foothold in the game, although they were particularly wasteful with possession once they worked their way into the Waders defensive third, as they continually gave the ball away trying to force play.

The Crows did keep improving throughout the half and found the equaliser with their first sight of goal, as ace poacher John Frendo seized on a poor attempt at a defensive header, to hook the ball past the home custodian to restore parity.

As the half drew to a close the Waders saw a goal chalked off for offside after a goalmouth scramble and in stoppage time had penalty appeals waved away as Ed Asafu-Adjaye made a superb goal line block from a close range header, with what they believed was his hand.

Despite starting the second half kicking up the slope it was Biggleswade who started brighter. They fashioned what turned out to be the best chance of the half when a strong run through the heart of the Royston side ended with the home centre forward blazing high and wide having been played in, leaving him with just Mason Tewkesbury in the Crows goal to beat.

Again Royston grew into the half and dominated territorially, without initially creating any real threat. Their first real sight of goal saw substitute Josh Oyinsan head wastefully over from Josh Castiglione’s corner. Scott Bridges saw a free kick deflected just wide of the post and John Frendo saw a header ruled out for a push on a defender. Frendo was then guilty of blazing over after a good Castiglione run and cut back.

Biggleswade seemingly content to play for a draw,  nearly stole all three points with the last play of the game, as Hall headed wide from a Parker corner.

For all Royston’s possession in the second half, a draw was probably a fair result, as they struggled to create chances and failed to register a shot on target in the second half. Biggleswade would therefore justifiably lay claim to their entitlement to the point they gained.
