Town Vets overwhelmed a sporting Birchanger Vets side 8-0 to record their biggest ever win over their hosts.

Kicking up the hill and against a strong wind Town struggled to get out of their own half in the first 20 minutes but the back four of Adam Smith, Nick King, Kevin Flack and Geoff Pinner were in great form and prevented any close range efforts on goal by Birchanger. Having weathered the initial storm Town began to get their passing game together and put the Birchanger defence under pressure.

After 25 minutes Nick Humphries was put clear down the left wing and his excellent cross to the far post was headed home by Peter Leete to open the scoring for Town. Another well-worked move resulted in Kevin Barthrop crossing from the right and Paul Lewis getting on the end of the pass to score from close range.

With the advantage of the conditions in the second half Town ran riot. It took 20 minutes for Town to extend their lead when Leete chipped the ball over the ‘keeper but goals then came thick and fast. Dave Daniels blasted in number four from a John Moulding through ball and then Barthrop scored the fifth goal with a fine right foot shot from just inside the right touchline. Daniels crossed for Lewis to score his second of the game and then Leete hit a fierce left foot volley from the edge of the penalty box to record his hat-trick. Moulding completed the scoring with a fine free kick from 30 yards that sailed over the ‘keeper’s head into the top of the net.
