First half goals from Ross Maddox and Danny McGovern saw Royston Town advance in the FA Youth Cup at the expense of Brentwood Town.

The Young Crows made the journey to Essex in fine form winning all nine of their competitive games so far this season. However due to Royston’s goalkeeper George Rogers feeling unwell during the warm up, and the team sheet already submitted, Royston had to resort to Captain & centre half Conor Kilgallon to fill in in goal, and a reshuffle of the defensive back four.

Royston started brightly, taking the lead after just six minutes. Ross Maddox beat the offside trap to latch on to a fine pass through the middle from Reece King, Maddox side footed the ball across goal and beyond the outstretched arm of the Brentwood keeper to make it 1-0 to the visitors.
Brentwood’s first chance came in the 16th minute but even then stand-in keeper Conor Kilgallon comfortably saved his curling effort.

The Crows continued to control the half and Perri Gentry shot narrowly wide before Reece King missed the target from a dangerous position.
However, McGovern made no mistake in first half stoppage time, running onto a neat pass from Ross Maddox before chipping the home keeper from inside the box to double the away side’s lead.

Royston had the chance to put the game to bed just five minutes into the second half when they were awarded a penalty after a Brentwood defender handled in the box, but McGovern hit the crossbar from the spot.

The penalty miss sparked some life into Brentwood but they had to wait until the 71st minute for an effort on goal, when a Brentwood corner was met by their centre-half who headed over from six yards.

Brentwood pushed forward to try to get back in the game in the final stages and forced a good save from Kilgallon in stoppage time. Royston held out to record an excellent 2-0 win watched on by 1st Team Manager Steve Castle.

Royston U18s now enter the 1st Round proper of the FA Youth Cup alongside division 1 & 2 Academy squads, in which they have been drawn at home to the winner of either Barton Rovers or AFC Sudbury on the 5th November at Garden Walk, Royston.
