Town Vets returned to action with a hard-fought 3-2 win over Fox & Duck at Therfield on Sunday.
After an even first 20 minutes Fox & Duck took the lead when their centre-forward struck a low drive from 25 yards that beat ‘keeper Simon Dobson. Nick Humphreys was looking dangerous down the left and his pin-point cross was swept into the net by Carlo Silenti to give Town a deserved equaliser.
Town then went ahead when another fine cross from Humphreys was volleyed in by Peter Leete. Fox & Duck then levelled the score at 2-2 when Town’s defence allowed the hosts’ powerful front runner too much space and he again struck a fine goal.
Although some openings were created by both sides, the majority of the second half was dominated by the defences with Matt McQueen in outstanding form for Town. The deadlock was broken late in the game when Humphreys delivered another great cross from the left and Paul Lewis was well-placed to nod home Town’s third goal.
The last 10 minutes produced end-to-end football with first Town denied by a series of fine saves by the home ‘keeper and then Dobson with a save and McQueen with a brave tackle preserving Town’s one-goal advantage.
