The Crow’s exuberant bubble was burst slightly as Royston Town surrendered their 8 match league winning run far too easily to an ordinary Godalming Town side who themselves had not won in the league since 5th September.

The match was a dour affair demonstrating few engineered chances by both sides and the Crows’ momentum was seriously hampered as early as the 15th minute when Royston’s influential captain Scott Bridges received a straight red card for a lunging challenge that was deemed sufficiently reckless and dangerous.

Sloppy, careless and blunt team play from the visitors posed no problem for their unambitious hosts and the first half was understandably score-less.

The second half was more of the same as Royston created no real impetus and Steve Castle’s efforts to inject some change with introduction of his substitutes never really had any affect.

This uninspiring game looked nothing but a goalless draw until the 83rd minute when Gus Scott-Morriss’ clumsy challenge in the penalty area was punished with a spot kick that G’s striker Darren Wheeler slotted in low under the diving Ron Yates. 1-0.

Royston’s dreadful afternoon was made worse as Kaan Fehmi was also shown a straight red card for an altercation with Godalming’s Liam Roberts, who was also dismissed for violent behaviour.

It was an extremely disappointing day for the promotion seeking Crows and they will certainly need to re-group quickly to prepare for the significant challenges to come.
