Just three days before Royston's first competitive cup game at Cheshunt on Saturday the team were given another solid work out by Thurlow Nunn Premier Division Godmanchester Rovers.

Paul Attfield had a larger squad at his disposal for this game but still had Joe De La Salle, Robbie Nightingale and Adie Cambridge out and this game was mainly a case of giving players who needed some good minutes on the pitch and that was achieved.

The Crows had a poor opening 25 minutes as they struggled to match the home side's work rate and were too often caught in possession or guilty of giving cheap possession away. That said the Royston defensive unit, marshalled by the excellent Dave Theobald, looked very composed and solid and gave little sight at goal for the home side.

It took a wonderful strike from Tom Pepper to spark The Crows into life as he picked up the ball centre pitch 25 yards out and riffled a unstoppable drive past the keeper's left hand.

Royston began to control the game better and Craig Hammond doubled their advantage on 41 minutes with a neat swivel and half volley effort from 18 yards beating the keeper's dive at his near post.

There was still time for Mitchell Bryant to go close before half time when he rounded the keeper but was thwarted by a block on the goal line.

The second half was an entertaining end to end affair with the customary flury of substitutions doing little to affect the pace of the game and entertainment value.

Apart from one angled twelve yard drive that flashed inches wide of goal Royston never really looked like conceding but always looked lively and capable when attacking at pace and added a third goal late on when Ryan Ingrey raced onto a Carl Edwards through ball and lobbed the advancing keeper to complete the scoring and work out.
