Royston finally found their killer instinct in front of goal at Forde Park on Tuesday night as hat tricks from George Brinkman and Josh Bronti saw them thrash hosts Langford on a fine footballing evening.

Recent performances have been encouraging but the failure to convert chances had been highlighted by manager Paul Attfield as a big problem. This was one of those nights that Royston found a high tempo, skillfull, attacking performance throughout and more crucially with goals!

Paul Attfield largely stuck with the same team that beat and started against Oxhey Jets and Stotfold although Dean McElvoy replaced the suspended Liam McDevitt in the heart of defence.

The Crows gradually took control of the game with Langford’s main threat coming from launched long throws into the area that were difficult but mainly effectively dealt with by massed numbers in the box.

On the counter Royston imposed themselves well and on 18 minutes a quick move saw Luke Robins run into the box and being brough down by the keeper for a penalty. Unfortunately usual and reliable penalty taker Ryan Lockett shot wide of the upright to let the hosts off.

This hardly affected the Royston side with fine attacking moves gracing the width of the pitch.

At first it seemed it might be another of those nights of missed opportunities as an excellent Luke Robins corner was headed against the crossbar by George Brinkman but nerves were settled on 28 minutes when another Lockett’s cross found Ricky Young at the far post. Young crashed his shot against the post but Carl Edwards was on hand to volley into the net from 14 yards.

The lead was taken into the interval despite plenty of visiting pressure which was maintained into the second half. An early Lewis Endacott strike was tipped around by the keeper and continued fast moving ball activity kept the hosts rear-guard under continued pressure as they persistently dealt with ball coming into dangerous areas.

This pressure finally paid off in the 62nd minute when Brinkman’s header from Lockett’s cross was paced too well for the keeper’s right hand to keep from going over the line.

On 70 minutes Brinkman made it three when he raced onto another Lockett through ball and as the keeper went to ground lifted the ball over him and into the net.

Now the Langford side were feeling the full force of the pace of Royston’s assault and tired legs left them frequently open to threatening attacks.

Josh Bronti then came off the bench to score a remarkable six minute hat trick, all similarly assisted by excellent Luke Robins crosses with Bronti converting each with fine poacher instinct.

It was left to Brinkman to convert the seventh and final goal late on as he smashed home Arron Welch’s superb cross on a fantastic night for the Royston side.
