Royston Town Vets lost interest in the competition which they won last season with a 3-2 defeat by Linton Vets in the Cambs Vets Invitation Cup.

Paul Middleton made his goalkeeping debut for Vets in the absence of Simon Dobson and Town were also without John Moulding, Laurence Revell and Magic.

The home team seemed more at home on the all-weather surface in the first half which produced few scoring chances.

Linton took the lead after 20 minutes of the second half following a defensive error. Kevin Barthrop put Town level when he fired the ball past the advancing 'keeper. Middleton made a brilliant save to tip the ball over but could do nothing to prevent the hosts taking the lead again and then extending it to 3-1 following a free kick on the edge of the box. Dicky Harris scored with a fine header from a right-wing corner to reduce the arrears and went close again in the final minutes but Linton held on to progress to the next round.
