Royston Town Vets returned to action after a 7-week break with a comfortable 6-1 victory over Moulton near Newmarket in the Cambs FA Vets Knock-Out Cup first round.

Town were missing a number of regulars – some had assumed the game would be off so made other arrangements – and ‘keeper Simon Dobson was still carrying a shoulder injury. This meant that Nick King was pressed into service as an emergency ‘keeper and 71-year old Ian Allen played the whole game.

The pitch at Moulton was in excellent condition despite having been covered in 3 inches of snow the previous day.

Town were soon into their stride kicking uphill and against a stiff breeze in the first half. The pace of Steve Starling, making a rare appearance for the Vets, was causing the home defence and he deservedly put Town ahead after 15 minutes when he converted a fine right-wing cross from Peter Leete. Further chances came and went and it was Moulton who scored next when a speculative effort from 30 yards eluded King as he stooped to collect the ball.

Allen, Starling and Nick Humphreys were involved in a flowing move down the left and when the ball was delivered into the penalty area Kevin Barthrop controlled the ball and fired in a shot inside the far post to put Town ahead again.

With the slope and back wind in the second half Town dominated the game and sent wave after wave of attack on the home side’s goalmouth. Mark Saggers extended Town’s lead with a crisp shot in the six-yard area and then having had a rasping volley saved by the home ‘keeper he gave him no chance with his next effort. Saggers should have completed his hat-trick but missed with only the ‘keeper to beat. Starling then completed his hat-trick with two opportunist efforts to give Town a convincing win.
