Royston Town continued their good run of form with a comfortable win over Beaconsfield SYCOB, despite a bizarre first half, dominating from start to finish and climbing to the top of the division, albeit with teams around them having played less games.

A mixture of youth and experience blended well with youngsters Gus Scott-Morriss and Josh Castiglione particularly lively supplying ammunition for the more experienced John Frendo to work his magic.

It was non-stop pressure from the Crows in the first half that brought a series of efforts on goal that Beaconsfield keeper Sam Bunting worked hard to keep out together with a couple of close shaves and full on impact with the woodwork.

Ryan Ingrey tested him early and Frendo had a header bounce back off of the post. Castiglione and Frendo again peppered the goal but there was no scoring breakthrough.

The half continued with Crows on top and it seemed just a matter of time before the net bulged. It did bulge but at the other end as on 47 minutes Harry Mepham gave the visitors a surprising lead, totally against the run of play, when he ran on and planted a fine curling shot past the previously redundant Joe Welch. 0-1.

Half time and players and spectators alike were scratching their heads in mild disbelief with the undercurrent of feeling that continued match domination would mean goals – they were right.

Just five minutes in and the scores were level with Adam Murray following up a slightly keeper spilled low drive from Ryan Towner. 1-1.

The Crows were in full flow now and Bunting produced two fine saves to retain parity, the best being a point blank save from a full power Frendo drive that must have hurt.

On 62 minutes, Scott Bridges, having his most effective games for some weeks, connected well to a Murray head back and slotted the ball just inside Bunting’s post to take a welcome lead. 2-1.

Frendo shook the post again then turned provider on 69 minutes with an exquisite defence baffling back heel set up for the energetic Castiglione to drive through and slot home. 3-1.

The scoring was completed on 92 minutes as Frendo himself got on the score-sheet by adding the finish to some great work up the right side by Castiglione and Scott-Morriss with the latter hitting the by-line and chopping back waist high for Frendo to side foot volley high into the Beaconsfeild net. Final score = 4-1.

A pleasure to watch.
