Royston started their third defence of the league floodlit cup competiton with a deserved one against division one side Bedford at Garden Walk on Thursday evening.

Despite taking a comfortable 2-0 lead into the half time interval the failure to convert second half chances nearly came back to haunt Paul Attfield's side who conceded a late consolation goal to set up a nervous last few minutes in the game.

The Royston manager again rotated his squad with this a third game of four in an eight day period. There were seven changes to the starting side that defeated Hullbridge on Tuesday evening showing the strength in depth currently at the club.

The Crows controlled the first half but were often let down with poor decision making or final balls to create the chances their approach play often deserved.

The home side took an early 9th minute lead when some defensive hesitation allowed George Brinkman to nip in and round the corner , scoring with a close range angled volley.

The second goal fifteen minutes later was very simpley executed when Ryan Lockett's low delivered corner was turned in by Luke Robins at the near post.

The quality of Royston's passing and final ball in the second half was much better but the finishing still lacked the quality needed at this level.

Brinkman, Robins and Lewis Endacott could have extended the lead with good chances with Robins and Bronti bringing excellent saves from the Bedford keeper.

Bedford began to throw extra bodies forward in the later stages of the game and like what has been seen so many times in recent games Royston started getting edgy and nervous on the ball with the visiting side starting to look threatening.

With eight minutes to go and long ball down the centre saw a forward get denied well by Luke Howard but the ball broke to a team mate that lobbed the ball into the empty net.

The Crow held on to their slim advantage to the end and the win sets up a home draw in the second round to Cockfosters or Potton United who have yet to play
