Royston Town matched their higher division opponents, Bishops Stortford FC, in this Herts Charity Cup Semi-Final for effort and endeavour, for most of a drab match, played on a pitch that looked good at the start of the match, but deteriorated quickly as the players churned up the heavy and soft surface, especially in the middle channel.
Steve Castle used this non-league game to take another look at some players and noticeably we saw the welcome return of Robbie Nightingale in centre midfield following rehabilitation from injury.
The game itself was a low-key affair with both sets of players struggling to find any cohesion on the difficult pitch and with Bishops Stortford ultimately controlling the game with good defending.
The only goal of the game came early in the second half when a low shot was blocked by George Darlow but he couldn’t hold on and Anthony Church poached the rebound.
Pleasingly, Royston kicked on in the latter parts of the match looking for the elusive equaliser but couldn’t really fashion any significant efforts on the away team goal.
A notable performance by the impressive Jhai Dhillon at left back caught the eye and the ever reliable Jack Bradshaw worked as hard as anyone in defence.
Back to important league action on Saturday with the visit of in-form Beaconsfield SYCOB and Steve Castle’s starting line-up for this one will be very interesting.
