Royston Town secured an important three points to maintain top position, but not after a mild scare in the last fifteen minutes as they saw their three goal advantage threatened with two late goals but had thankfully done enough to see the win through.

The first half’s solitary goal came fifteen minutes in when Danny May sent over a controlled free-kick and skipper Scott Bridges headed in. 1-0.

Joe Welch more than played his part today with a steady string of important stops and on the half hour mark spread himself well to keep the Sarnies out.

A minute later and Martel Powell was handed a great chance to extend the Crows lead. A poor back pass saw Powell pounce but fine goalkeeping from James Reading kept the shot out.

The half-time saw the home lead remain at a slender one goal.

This lead was doubled two minutes in to the second half as John Frendo threatened and his stretched effort bounced off Reading and looped up and with Frendo looking to finish it off, Gus Scott-Morriss eagerly ran in and headed in firmly. 2-0.

The first goal combination nearly paid off again as May’s corner found Bridges but this time his header cannoned back off of the bar.

A period of pressure from the visitors first brought a loud penalty shout, then a blasted over decent chance and another good save by Welch and with this away side push defended we saw the Crows make it three.

Adam Murray, up for a dead ball delivery, was bundled over in the box and man of the match Bridges netted his second from the penalty spot on 64 minutes. 3-0.

Substitutions were made and Simon Thomas replaced Frendo and Luke Warner-Eley swapped with May.

Egham were not finished in this game and stepped up a gear and produced two decent goals. Firstly on 71 minutes when Brendan Matthews struck and then six minutes later Gareth Chendlik made it two. 3-2.

This cued a sweaty last ten minutes for Crows’ players, managers and supporters alike but they rallied enough in performance and temperament to see the job through and bank the full three points.
