The Royston Town faithful witnessed a much improved display from their team compared to the miserable showing on Tuesday night, producing a dominant and match winning first half that was much more in line with the Crows promotion intentions.

Steve Castle made a few starting line-up changes, some enforced with both Bridges brothers absent and Ryan Ingrey still injured and some as a reflection of the below par previous match. Simon Thomas, Spyros Mentis and Jack Bradshaw were all dropped to the bench and we saw starts for Gus Scott-Morriss, Josh Castiglione, Martel Powell and Kaan Fehmi who donned the captain’s armband.

It was an emphatic start as youngster Castiglione sped up the right wing in the third minute and delivered a ball in that was half deflected by a Marlow defender only to loop up for the alert Fehmi to nod in. This goal visibly settled all nerves and the Crows went about their business in an unanswered fashion in the first half of play. 1-0.

It did take until the half hour mark for the score to be doubled and this was from centre half Adam Murray who stooped low to guide in full back Gus Scott-Morriss’ corner. 2-0.

Ryan Towner got in on the act on 36 minutes with a low central finish following a decent football move and an intelligent hold up and lay off from John Frendo. 3-0.

Half time saw a more pleasing three nil lead.

The game was effectively put to bed in the 49th minute as Fehmi got his second with an accurate but slightly miss-hit low finish from a superb probing pass from Powell. 4-0.

Castle used this lead to make changes and rest players for Tuesday’s match and Adam Murray, Danny May and Kaan Fehmi gave way for Luis Fernandes, Spyros Mentis and Gary Cohen to see the game out.

Credit to Marlow and they kept going in this game and managed to claw two goals back in the last 15 minutes. Firstly, from Jay Welch on 75 mins and then a special finish from Marlow captain Chris Ovenden as he planted a skilful side-foot volley high into Joe Welch’s net. 4-2.

The three points were won and the Crows move on to their next two matches which are both cup games, firstly near neighbours Hitchin Town on Tuesday 4th Oct in the League Cup and then Egham Town in the FA Trophy next Saturday 8th Oct.

Team: Welch, Scott-Morriss, Brathwaite, Towner, Murray (Fernandes), Frater, Castiglione, May (Mentis), Frendo, Powell, Fehmi (Cohen).

Subs not used – Thomas, Bradshaw.
