WATFORD progressed to the next round of the Herts Senior Cup after defeating Royston Town 3-1, thanks to a mixture of Professional and Academy players.

A first-half double from Diego Fabbrini within the space of three minutes turned the game on its head after the hosts went ahead via Kaan Fehmi. Substitute Michael Folivi then continued his impressive scoring record with the third Watford goal.Senior players such as Tommie Hoban, Sean Murray, Connor Smith and Fabbrini all featured and put in professional displays on a difficult surface at Garden Walk.

Scholar Dennon Lewis was impressive early on as the Hornets looked dangerous on the breakaway, with Royston keeper, Ron Yates, twice denying Lewis.

Fehmi planted the ball the wrong side of the post after 10 minutes when clean through but he opened the scoring after 18 minutes when he got on the end of Jack Bradshaw’s deep cross.

The lead didn’t last long though as Fabbrini netted after Lewis’ strong run down the Hornets’ left flank. Then on 28 minutes the Italian grabbed his second of the game as he hit a low effort from the right of the box.

Always showing for the ball, Fabbrini was a thorn in Royston’s side all evening as he made good use of the ball wherever possible.

After the break, Fabbrini was denied four minutes after the re-start following Sean Murray’s strong run and pass.

Twelve minutes from the end, Rene Gilmartin kept the Hornets in the game as he sent the ball out for a corner kick from a close-range effort.

Then in the final minute of normal time Folivi made sure it was Watford’s night as he finished with style after Fabbrini’s pass.
