Royston Town Vets returned to winning ways with a close 2-1 victory over Cambridge Ambassadors in the Cambs Veterans League 1.

With Adam Smith unavailable and Matt McQueen injured, Manager Graham Hagger slotted into midfield and Kevin Barthrop played his first game of the season after a long injury break.

Town were soon into their stride and playing well in the opening exchanges and were unlucky not to take the lead after 10 minutes when Stuart Snowden unleashed a fierce right foot drive from 30 yards that struck the right hand upright and out of play. Soon after however, Town deservedly opened the scoring when Magic squared the ball across the penalty area for Barthrop to slot home.

The hosts equalised on the 30 minute mark following a corner on the right. Goalkeeper, Simon Dobson was blocked from reaching the cross by his own defenders and was beaten at the near post.

In a tight second half both teams struggled to create openings but Town got a lucky break with 10 minutes remaining when a speculative effort from Geoff Pinner was deflected past the onrushing 'keeper into the net to give Town the lead again.

Town survived one late scare when Ambassadors hit the post but deservedly ran out winners.

Paddy Coughlin and Lawrence Revell were outstanding in defence for Town and Dickie Harris showed some encouraging touches leading the front line.
