Royston Town Vets started their season with a resounding 7-4 win over Hemingford at Garden Walk on Sunday.
Nejat Kocak opened the scoring after 10 minutes, cutting in from the right to slot the ball past the advancing ‘keeper.
The visitors were then gifted an equaliser when an intended back pass from John Moulding to ‘keeper Simon Dobson failed to reach its target and a Hemingford forward nipped in to score into an empty net.
Moulding made amends for his earlier mistake when he won the ball on the edge of the 18-yard area and fired in a right foot shot to restore Town’s lead. Peter Leete then added the third with a cross from 30 yards near the right goal line that eluded the visiting ‘keeper.
Hemingford made a strong start to the second half and scored twice in quick time to draw level again.
Town went 4-3 ahead through Kocak but the visitors restored parity with a terrific free kick from 20 yards that Dobson could not get a hand on.
Kocak put Town ahead again and in the process completed his hat-trick. Stuart Snowden, who had a solid debut game in midfield for Town, added a sixth and Kocak completed the scoring with his fourth and Town’s 7th goal to give new Team Manager Graham Hagger a good win in his first game in charge.
