Royston Town Vets went down to a last-minute goal from Hemingford Vets on Sunday.
Both goalkeepers made a string of excellent saves throughout the match to frustrate opposing attackers.
Centre back Laurence Revell came closest to scoring for Town midway through the second half with a thunderous drive that crashed into the crossbar and rebounded to safety. He was also Town's outstanding player with strong performances from Lee Rogers and Stuart Snowden in midfield.
When the game seemed to be heading for a draw – probably the fairest result – an attack from Hemingford resulted in a shot that was deflected on its way to goalkeeper Simon Dobson who made a valiant effort to punch the ball over the bar but could only palm into his own net.
The Vets travel to Bengeo next Sunday in the first round of the Herts FA Vets Sunday KO Cup.
