Town Vets followed up last week’s 4-3 win over Cambridge University Press with a hard fought 1-1 draw against Standon & Puckeridge at Garden Walk on Sunday.

The majority of the first half was contested in the middle third of the pitch with few openings on goal. Town created a good chance for Geoff Pinner but his shot was saved by the visitors ‘keeper. Carlo Silenti then hit a powerful 25-yard effort that skimmed the crossbar.

Town looked the more likely team to score at the start of the second half but the Standon ‘keeper was in inspired form and saved efforts from Paul Lewis and Kevin Barthrop. The visitors took the lead on the 60 minute mark when a breakaway down the left resulted in a cross that found a Standon forward unmarked on the right of the 6-yard area and he gave ‘keeper Simon Dobson no chance from close range.

Town continued to carve out openings for themselves including one when Lewis passed to Ian Allen and his fine right-foot shot caught a slight deflection that carried the ball just over the bar. More pressure was exerted on the visitor’s goal with a series of crosses and corners that either went wide or were saved. Lewis seemed certain to open the scoring for Town when he dived to make a low header that beat the ‘keeper but the ball hit the right upright and was cleared to safety. Then in the last minute Town finally found a deserved equaliser when John Moulding won the ball near the left corner flag and set up Geoff Pinner to score with a brilliant left foot shot that sailed into the roof of the net.
