Town Vets finally ran out winners 3-2 in a closely-contested game against Standon & Puckeridge which ebbed and flowed throughout the match.

With a number of regulars missing Town welcomed Graham Hagger to the back four for his Vets debut.

The visitors, playing good football, dominated the first 20 minutes but it was against the run of play when Town took the lead. Paul Lewis crossed from the left and Kevin Barthrop coolly slotted home. The lead only lasted 5 minutes when the visitors headed a goal past Simon Dobson following a corner. Town’s defence was stretched following a quick break down their right and again Dobson was beaten by a header to put Standon 2-1 ahead.

Michael Baker replaced Ian Allen at half time and partnered Nick King in defence with Hagger moving to midfield. Town started to take control of the match for the first time and created a number of openings but found the visitors’ ’goalie in fine form. Mid way through the second half Town were awarded a penalty for hand ball and Lewis made no mistake from the spot kick to bring Town level.

Soon after Town took a 3-2 lead. King found Lewis with an excellent long ball down the left and Matt McQueen got on the end of Lewis’s cross to head against the corner of the upright and bar. The rebound fell kindly to Carlo Silenti who promptly drilled the ball into the net. John Moulding put Kevin Barthrop clear in the six-yard box but his shot trickled wide of the post with only the ‘keeper to beat.

The visitors came back strongly in the last 10 minutes but Town held on for a hard earned victory.
