Match Report: Royston Town Vets v Walkern Vets

Walkern Vets 1-5  Royston Town Vets

Royston Town Vets impressive early season form continued with a comfortable 5-1 win over Walkern at Stevenage on Sunday.

With regular 'keeper Paul Barnes unavailable, Nick King took the gloves and was unlucky not to keep a clean sheet.

Team Manager Stuart Snowden opened the scoring after 10 minutes from the penalty spot after an infringement in the box.  Midfielder and leading goal-scorer Chris Geldart extended the lead when he controlled a left-wing cross from Paddy Coughlin and beat the 'keeper from close range.

The pace of Steve McGee up front was a constant menace to the home defence but Town were unable to extend their lead until midway through the second half. A left wing corner from Ian Allen was fired into a crowded home goalmouth by Paul Gibson and a deflection eluded the Walkern 'keeper to give Town their third goal. Steve McGee's deft header extended Town's lead before Walkern scored a consolation goal with a lob over Nick King's head into the net.

The Walkern 'keeper made a string of great saves to prevent Town from extending their lead further but was finally beaten by a Snowden right foot thunderbolt to make the score at the end of the game 5-1 to Town.

The Vets are away to Eaton Socon Vets next week in the first round of the Cambs F.A Vets League 1.
