Town Vets clocked up their fifth consecutive victory in the Cambs Vets Invitation Cup to consolidate their lead at the top of the league.
On this occasion it was local neighbours Whittlesford Vets who were the visitors to Garden Walk and during the first twenty minutes they looked the more impressive side and enjoyed the lion’s share of ball possession.
A stroke of good luck kick-started the game for Town Vets when Barthrop cut in from the right and drove the ball across the six-yard area and a Whittlesford defender diverted the ball past his ‘keeper into the net. If the first goal was fortunate the second certainly came from good play with Silenti winning the ball on the left edge of the penalty box then laying it off to Saggers who crossed to the far post for Leete to head in. Town extended their lead again shortly before half-time when a cross from the right was converted by Saggers with a fierce right-foot volley that gave the visiting ‘keeper no chance.
Town’s fourth goal arrived mid way into the second half courtesy of a penalty awarded by referee Martin Pope. Pinner was tripped in the box and Lewis sent the ‘keeper the wrong way with the resultant penalty kick. The visitors’ defence was put under sustained pressure for long periods as Town took control of the game. Saggers scored the fifth with a thunderous left foot shot from 25 yards and then Lewis added a sixth when he rounded the ‘keeper having been put through by Daniels. Daniels then completed the scoring with a fine diving header from a left wing cross from Humphries.
