Royston Town Vets lifted the inaugural Cambs Vets Invitation Knock Out Cup with a hard earned victory over Wickambrook Vets at Garden Walk on Sunday.

Steve Starling returned to partner Peter Leete up front and the two combined well as Leete played Starling in to fire home the opener after only 5 minutes. The visitors were soon level following a defensive mix-up and then took the lead from a free kick from 25 yards.

‘Keeper Simon Dobson was on the wrong end of a couple of reckless tackles, the second of which resulted in a booking for the offender and to Dobson for his reaction.

Leete scored an equaliser for Town with a pin point lob over the ‘keeper from 20 yards to leave the score level at half-time.

Town gradually gained control of the game in the second half and deservedly took the lead again mid-way through the half when Mark Saggers scored with a terrific left foot shot from 30 yards.

Town survived a few goalmouth scrambles in the last 10 minutes but Dobson made one great save to preserve Town’s lead.

Saggers’ goal proved to be a worthy Cup winner for Town and a fitting end to a successful season.
