Town Vets got the defence of their Cambs Veterans Invitation Cup off to an excellent start with a 1-0 win over a powerful Saffron Walden Vets side on Sunday.

Royston have been drawn in a league of five with other fixtures scheduled against Linton Aztecs Veterans, Mount Pleasant Veterans and Newport Veterans.

Good football was at a premium on an uneven surface and both teams struggled to play a passing game. The majority of the game in the first half was played in the middle third of the pitch with defences in control. Crosses and long-range shots failed to trouble either 'keeper.

In the second half a more open game developed with both teams looking to attack. Town carried the greater goal threat and after 20 minutes of the half deservedly took the lead. John Moulding, excellent throughout the match in midfield for Town, collected the ball 30 yards out, dribbled past three defenders and set up a pass on the right side of the 18-yard area to Peter Leete who hit a low right foot shot across the 'keeper inside the left hand post.

The hosts best chance came with 15 minutes remaining when a Saffron Walden forward burst free down the left but Town's 'keeper Simon Dobson rushed out to the edge of the penalty area and made a brilliant save to prevent an equaliser.

The pace of Dave Daniels was creating problems for the Saffron Walden defence and he outstripped them only to see his shot rise over the bar from close range. Paul Lewis then thought he had scored when his effort seemed to have cleared the goal line before the 'keeper scrambled the ball out of the goal. Claims for a goal were waved away by the Referee and the linesman.

Saffron Walden pumped more and more long balls forward in a desperate effort to level the score but Matt McQueen and Adam Smith were in great form at the heart of the defence for Town and Nick Humphreys kept the hosts' most dangerous player in check at left back.

Town were good value for their win.
