A satisfactory night’s work from the travelling Crows in this Red Insure cup match. A really early goal from Scott Bridges and a swift 1-2 of scores ten minutes into the second half from Kaan Fehmi and Ryan Lockett killed off any real resistance of St Ives and despite a consolation goal from Ben Seymour-Shoves for the hosts, Royston eased through to the next round.
It was the Crows' passing game that caught the eye on the wet and patchy pitch and dynamic early runs from the lively Reece Dobson were not quite matched by his cross/pass selection.
Scott Bridges’ early goal, struck home as the St Ives’ defence failed to fully clear a Ross Collins cross, gave the visitors a good start, but they could not build on the one goal score-line in the first 45 minutes, despite creating good chances and seeing home keeper Tim Trebes make some decent and solid saves as Royston’s final third work did not accede to the heights of the impressive approach play.
The game was effectively over as a match ten minutes into the second period as the introduction of substitute Kaan Fehmi for Gary Hart demonstrated what a vicious predator he is, pouncing on a loose ball following another really good diving stop from Trebes, as a powerful shot from Collins had stung his right hand. A minute later and it was three with a well seen and executed lob pass by Scott Bridges flat footing the home defence and the well timed run of Ryan Lockett arrived to left foot volley across the goal and into the net.
St Ives got one back as consolation five minutes later when Seymour-Shove followed in after Kieran Fitzgerald’s low shot had struck the post.
Royston had chances to increase their lead, notably a well hit drive by Fehmi that was brilliantly saved and a well met Lewis Endacott header – on for Collins – that shaved the post from a corner delivery. The last substitution saw Robbie Nightingale get some rare minutes to give some rest for the once again highly influential Scott Bridges.
The game as a contest stagnated and became slightly scrappy – but the hard work was done and Royston deservedly progress to the next round of the league cup.
Special mention for the two youngsters in defence – George Powell had a good game at right back, especially in the first half and U18 captain Conor Kilgallon – making his full first team debut – looked assured and in control throughout.
