Town Vets booked their place in the final of the Cambs Vets Invitation Cup with a comfortable 2-0 semi-final win over a skilful and sporting Wisbech St Mary Vets side at Garden Walk on Sunday.

The surface of the pitch after the prolonged dry spell and a strong northerly wind made playing conditions very difficult and it took both teams a good part of the first half to acclimatise. The visitors played some neat football but failed to produce the killer pass to open up Town’s defence. Town looked the more dangerous and after 20 minutes were awarded a free kick 25 yards from goal. Peter Leete hit a brilliant, unstoppable right-foot shot that curled over the ‘keeper into the top right hand corner to give Town the lead.

Leete and strike partner Paul Lewis both had shots on target but the visiting ‘keeper was not beaten again and the first 45 minutes ended with Town having a 1-0 advantage.

Town continued to control the game in the second half with the back four of Stuart Moulding, Matt McQueen, Adam Smith and Geoff Pinner in fine form. Midfielder John Moulding was making probing runs into the box and from one was well placed to score but could not convert the opening. Mark Saggers then hit a rasping left-foot volley that took a big deflection and sailed over a helpless ‘keeper into the top corner to extend Town’s lead.

Although Town piled the pressure on the visitors defence and won a succession of corners they were unable to score again and the game ended 2-0 to Town.
