Royston Town Vets met an in form and powerful Red Bull Newnham team at Pembroke College on Sunday and lost 1-3.
The hosts took a 2-0 lead in the first twenty minutes from two dubious penalty decisions and added a third goal before half time.
Town shaded an even second half and scored the only goal of the half when John Moulding lobbed the 'keeper from a free kick taken from 35 yards.
Simon Dobson made a series of brilliant saves to deny the hosts any further goals.
Lawrence Revell gave another outstanding display in the middle of the back four for Town.
