In a dress rehearsal for next week’s FA Cup match, honours were shared as Dunstable picked up their first point of the season.

Royston started the brighter as Josh Castiglione terrorised the visiting full back from the off. Having received a 2nd minute caution for cynically trying to stop Castiglione he was powerless to stop the winger scooting past him and crossing for Sam Ives to bundle the ball home to give Royston a 12th minute lead.

From here onwards Royston took complete control of the game but failed to build on their lead due to either a poor final ball or wayward shooting when clearer opportunities were created.

The second half started with Sam Ives striking the cross bar but gradually Dunstable grew in confidence as they sensed they could take something from the game.

The equaliser arrived in the 60th minute as a mistake in the Royston backline allowed Lanre Ladipo to race down the inside right and cross for Gedeon Okito to convert at the back post.

Royston continued to press but played into Dunstable’s hands as a succession of corners, crosses and long throws caused little problem to the tall away defence who dealt with everything without too many scares.

The real excitement only arrived in the 9 minutes of added time as Royston finally got behind the visiting full backs but James Potton was unable to find a touch on Lee Chappell’s cross and then saw his close range effort well blocked by Garry Malone in the away goal. During this time Dunstable nearly snatched victory as Ladipo ran unchallenged for 30 yards but found Joe Welch equal to his well struck shot.

A game Royston should have won but a resolute Dunstable side deserved a share of the spoils.
