Saffron Walden 11-a-side Tournament

 V Elsenham draw 0-0

First game and on chances we really should have won this but some of the football we played was excellent, I did say to the boys that it is important not to lose the first game.

  V Spartak won 1-0

Thought it was going to be the same story with lots of chances but no goals that was until with three minutes left Jack O unleashed a thunderbolt which left the keeper with no chance and us three deserved points.

V Plantation won 1-0

We were playing some really nice football but were again wasteful in front of goal, that was until the start of the second half when James R cross field pass found Sam and he made no mistake, I must add some of the football we were playing was a joy to watch.

V Sawston won 1-0

We needed a draw to be certain to qualify and Sawston needed a win. The first half was quite tight although we had more of the ball. They changed formation second half which left gaps at the back and we did look dangerous. The game changer came when Rhys picked the ball up well in his own half and went on an unbelievable run beating players before finding himself 1 on 1 with the keeper and he made no mistake what a goal. On the minus side Richard who had been superb all afternoon picked up a knock and Alasdair was harshly sent off which meant both would miss the final.

Final v Elsenham won 2-1

We changed formation for the final with only one up front and five in midfield. This did not stop us from creating more chances and again playing some nice football. Matt and AJ were marking their two danger men and doing a good job in keeping them both quite. It was 0-0 at half time but we were sure if we continued to play in the same way we could win the game. We did take the lead early in the first half when James B refused to give up on a lost cause he not only kept the ball on but put in a real dangerous cross which the defender could only turn into his own net. We seemed in control that was until with three minutes left Elenham equalised when a cross from the right hit Jack M on the arm and the ref pointed to the spot. Robbie had no chance from the penalty and it was back to all square. We continued to press for the winner and with a minute left Rhys held the ball up before turning and spotting Sam’s run he found him with a chip over the top and Sam ran on to smash the ball home, this sent our supporters wild and we saw the game out and deservedly won against a very good Elenham side.

It’s always nice to win a tournament but even better when you play as well as we did today some of the passing and movement was excellent and the whole squad should be happy with their contribution today. Well done boys six weeks off before we come back to pre season and I for one can’t wait.
