Royston’s new look youth team started their midweek league campaign off with an excellent victory at Deeping Rangers on Wednesday evening.

With holiday commitments and recent new signings hampering any genuine chance of getting the whole squad together in recent weeks, this considered, the team did very well and but for the heroics of the home keeper the margin of victory could have been greater.

Royston started well and took an early sixth minute lead when Shane Carthy volleyed in Ryan Webb’s excellent left wing cross. Royston continued to press with the home keeper making two terrific tip over saves from Carthy and Daniel Bond.

As the half went on the game evened out and became a very open end to end affair. The hosts looked particularly threatening from set play routines but never really tested Royston keeper Dan Plumb. At the other end Royston also had a number of set plays with the team not capitalising on the excellent deliveries from Luke Hennessey and Ryan Webb.

The home keeper continued to make saves in open play with fine blocks to deny Shane Carthy and Daniel Bond and just before half time Bond sprung on a rare keeping mistake but rolled his shot agonisingly wide.

The second half saw Royston continue to dominate in the opening thirty minutes as the game became encamped in the Deeping half. Ryan Webb, Jordan Hall and Luke Reed were also superbly denied by the unbeatable keeper until a superb lobbed cross from Webb was headed in by Jordan Spencer with twenty minutes remaining to double Royston’s lead.

Against the run of play the hosts reduced the deficit with ten minutes left from a direct free kick which spurred on the home side and from their next free kick a half cleared ball was struck firmly into the net from 15 yards.

Matt Brennan then hacked another header off the line as Royston came under some serious late pressure but they hung in and won the game in the 87th minute with a superb counter attack goal. A long ball from defence was superbly won by Jordan Spencer and he set up Shane Carthy to slip past the keeper and deservedly open Royston’s league account with three points.
