Match | Hitchin Town v Royston Town |
Competition | Eastern Junior Alliance: Beds Division |
Result | Won 3-1 |
Royston Scorers | Worbey (2), Webb |
Royston started 2011 with a sluggish performance against Hitchin Town FC run by Crows player Nick Mulvaney, however came away with 3 points and a 3-1 win.
Royston was never able to gain real control of the game and were often prone to giving possession away cheaply, with no real quality throughout the first half there wasn’t much comment on, Royston's keeper Harry Williams produced a fine save but was rarely troubled with his back 4 putting in a decent shift.
Half Time 0-0
After some firm words at half time, the young Crows tried to keep the ball and finally start to play football, with the introduction of George Duffin, Daniel Bond and Matt Brennan things started to look slightly better but there was still no consistency, Duffin won his team a penalty as his run in from the left wing saw him brought down giving the referee no choice, Ben Worbey stepped up and slotted under the home keeper. Match fitness would be key to this and with both teams starting to tire meaning more gaps where appearing and Hitchin invaded down the right hand side for a cut back leaving a home striker free to slot past a helpless Williams.
Captain Ryan Webb scored after a miskick from the keeper fell to his feet with one man to beat he calmly put his team back in front, Worbey scored the goal of the game with a delightful free kick on the edge of the box to finish Town's scoring.
Manager Jorden Gibson said with some frustration ‘We never got going today, we haven’t played for nearly two months and I expected some rustiness, However that kind of performance won’t get you anywhere against a stronger opposition. three quarters of our team looking unfit today and you can’t afford to carry players at this level.’
