Reality check for Royston's youngsters as they were overwhelmingly beaten by Kettering Town's youth academy on Sunday afternoon. Late drop outs and players arriving minutes before kick off hampered any reasonable organisation and the first half was forgettable as Royston found themselves six nil down by the half time. An early George Duffin header was headed off the line and a Shane Carthy free kick was fumbled by the keeper with no follow-up for the obvious tap in evident. Two goalkeeping errors gifted the home side a double advantage which Royston never recovered from as they were often undone with swift passing football that accounted for another four goals by the interval. The Management's obvious displeasure of the performance was made known at half time and within 30 seconds of the second half Daniel Bond converted from ten yards to inspire the side. Unfortunately the visitors failed to get any football control although the effort levels raised to more competitive levels. Kettering continued to look dangerous in possession but created little and when Shane Carthy headed in a corner with 20 minutes remaining to reduce the deficit to 6-2 hope still reamained. Luke Reed and George Duffin both had efforts very well saved before Kettering finished the game in style with a sweeping move and superb strike deep into injury time. So Royston suffered their first league defeat of the season and must raise their effort and competitiveness to better levels when they entertain the same side at Garden Walk next Sunday morning
