On a wet and windy September afternoon Royston Town Vets played their first Cambs Invitation Cup match away to Cambridge Ambassadors at Trumpington. Royston started brightly with the wind behind them and were camped out in the Ambassadors half for the first 20 minutes, but no fruit for their efforts. It wasn’t until a clever back heel from Silenti created an opportunity for Barthrop to open the scoring.

This was to be the last contribution from Silenti who then limped off with a calf strain. Ambassadors raised their game and matched the Town for the next 20 minutes until on the stoke of half time Saggers latched onto a long ball and at the second time of asking put the Town 2 goals to the good.

The second half began rather scrappy with neither side being able to take control of the midfield. With some strong battles from Hagger and McQueen, Royston started to dominate once again. Lewis up front worked tirelessly creating lots of chances, one falling to Barthrop to give him his second and Royston’s 3rd.

On the 65th minute Lewis once again the creator pulled the ball back for Hagger whose shot was blocked, as the ball broke loose Pinner smashed the ball into the bottom corner from 18 yards. Ambassadors never gave up and were rewarded with a consolation goal 10 minutes from time, from a long cross which found Dobson struggling to reach at the far post and was tapped in.

To finish off the afternoon Royston hit back with another goal from Barthrop to give him a well deserved hat-trick.
