Town Vets resumed their season after a 6-week break with a trip to Haverhill to face Mount Pleasant Vets in the Cambs F.A. Vets Invitation Cup.
Town made light of the difficult playing surface to record an excellent 2-1 win against a very competent and competitive opposition.
In the first half Town were kicking up the slope and against a stiff breeze but played good football and retained possession of the ball well to deny the hosts many opportunities to test Simon Dobson in goal. Steve Holden and Stuart Moulding were outstanding in the heart of Town’s defence. Town also looked dangerous going forward and when, after 25 minutes, Adam Smith sent over an inviting cross from the right wing Peter Leete scored with a crisp left foot volley to put Town ahead. Further chances fell to Leete and Nick Humphries but the teams turned round with no addition to the score.
With the advantage of the slope and the breeze Town started the second half in dominant mood and a succession of openings were created but a combination of excellent defence from Mount Pleasant and bad luck and/or a failure from Town to finish off promising moves left Town with the slender one-goal lead. As often happens in such games the opposition took strength from Town’s failure to score again and began to exert some pressure themselves but great work on a heavy pitch by Matt McQueen and Carlo Silenti in midfield helped snuff any threat on goal.
Town continued to look the most likely team to score and they deservedly extended their lead after 65 minutes when an Adam Smith corner was cleared back to the same player and his resultant cross was headed in by Matt McQueen.
With minutes remaining Mount Pleasant finally found a way through Town’s defence to reduce the arrears but Town ran out worthy winners with a 100% record in the competition after 3 games.
