The last pre season friendly before the start of our league campaign was against Royston Celtic and we new it would be a test because it was a local derby and school bragging rights were at stake. We asked the boys to be patient again and not to be afraid to keep the ball and go backwards if it meant we kept possession, Celtic would be resilient and would not roll over.
We started at a good tempo and were on the front foot from the start but had not got our passing game going as to often passes went astray. After ten minutes we were awarded a free kick twenty five yards out and Richard placed the ball down before dispatching the ball into the corner of the net giving the keeper no chance. This settled us down and on twenty minute we were awarded another free kick this time thirty five yards out at an angle once again Richard stood over the kick before sending in a beautiful cross for Rhys to head home from close range. We were now completely on top and another flowing move ended with Rhys finishing well only for the goal to be ruled out for off side. Number three did soon follow great work from Ross on the right ended with Sam scoring from close range.
We were reasonably happy with the first halt although we could improve our passing and we were to quiet so we asked for improvement on both.
Within five minutes of the re start we were 5-0 up two great finishes from Rhys to complete his hat trick finished this game off we continued to dominate and create lots of chances but failed to convert any more we did make lots of changes so at times we missed the fluency but what we saw was encouraging. Robbie had to wait five minutes from time to make a save and this he did so another clean sheet as well, although credit must go to Celtic who never gave up.
We spoke at the end about how important it is to keep the ball and work an opening and also how we must talk more but overall a good performance and we now look forward to our first league game of the season away to Hatfield.
