It was a beautiful morning for beautiful football. Andy, Nick and I were mildly concerned that the boys would take their collective foot off the gas after securing the title last week – we needn’t have worried as the boys were awesome today and they seemed to have relaxed in the right way and proceeded to put on a display of strong and determined defending, committed and creative midfield work and explosive and deadly forward play.

Biggleswade United have been on a great run of results having won their last nine matches and can be seen to be one of the stronger teams in the league so we braced ourselves for a tough challenge and prepared the squad for this game in our usual way. We wanted our boys to show why they are league champions and to play the exciting and flowing football we know they can. The weather was bright, warm and dry and the pitch was in good condition, but probably a bit hard underfoot.

The game started with some good Royston pressure and the boys forced a couple of early corners with the second one being met with a great diving header by Lewis that went just wide. Our five man midfield was doing the business and a strong run by Foxy forced a foul and Mick stepped up for the free kick putting a strong shot high into the net for 1-0. The lively Lewis put in a great run and shot that was saved for a corner. Bigglewade put a good move together and the resulting shot was well cleared off the line by Joe. A throw-in found Callum, who held it up well for the forward thinking Foxy to pick up his pass and finish it off sharply for 2-0. Power play from Matt won the ball in midfield and passed to Callum who went on a surging run down the left and put in an accurate by-line left foot cross for Mick to arrive in the middle and connect to first time and we were three up 3-0. We gave Tom T a rest and went to four in midfield bringing Bruce on upfront and pushed Foxy out wide right. The goal of the game came with again strong work in midfield winning a loose second ball, passing to Mick who sent an exquisite ground pass through the defence for Lewis to speed onto and expertly lob the keeper for 4-0. Mick got on the end of a through ball but this time his shot was well saved by the Biggleswade goalie. A long Rory drop kick brought the Colt’s fifth goal with Mick running on strongly to finish well for his third goal of the game. The half finished with a good 5-0 score-line.

The boy’s first half performance had been spot on. They were strong in all departments and the passing and movement was very good. We gave JP a rest and asked Tom T to play centre-half and we swapped Rory (another good half) for Charlie and sent them out again.

The second period started with again the Royston boys pushing on. A throw in was half cleared and the alert Brad put in a powerful long shot that went just wide. Another throw was flicked on dangerously and Callum finished it off for 6-0. We won a penalty and Charlie stepped up to take it – but put his strong effort just wide. A long ball from Biggleswade wasn’t dealt with and the United striker finished well for 6-1. Another strong run from Callum brought an effort on goal but his low shot cannoned back off of the post. An attempt from Bruce went wide and another shot from Callum was well saved. The reluctant keeper was having a good spell and he produced another fine save from a firm shot by Mick. A corner was met well by a prowling JC but his near post shot went just wide. Persistent and skilful work from Lewis and good feet from Mick brought a chance on goal and he buried it for 7-1. Lewis ran onto a midfield pass and his shot was saved. Brad and JP were now upfront and this overload forced a foul and JP stepped up for the penalty and shot accurately into the net to complete the scoring at 8-1.

We were all very pleased with this result but more importantly the football played was full on and exciting. Special mentions for Mick who was in tricky mode, Callum who was everywhere, Matt who was great, The whole solid back four, Strong play from Foxy in the first half and good defending by Tommy T in the second. Extra special mention for the spectator’s man of the match Lewis, who in five years of coaching him I have never seen him have a better all round game. All match he was strong, fast, confident, skilful and creative and a top notch goal – superb game mate.
