The boys showed tremendous character and bouncebackablity to put together a terrific team performance against a potentially tricky Fulbourn Falcons Colts team. The whole squad looked keen to put last week’s hard to swallow defeat against Newmarket behind them and kick on again.

We lined up with Rory in goal, Jonah right back, Joe left back, Olly and Kyle centre halves, Callum and Jake in the middle with Jordan right and Keiran left midfield, Foxy and Tom would start up front – leaving us with Adam, George and the returning Mick on the bench.

The weather was fine but windy and the pitch was in great condition. We urged the boys to take the wind into account, get the ball down early and play our football.

The game started with the Royston boys on the front foot showing well for the ball and stringing together good ground passes and the first chance came early with some good work by Olly setting up Callum who put his shot just wide. The first goal came from Jordan who outpaced his marker down the right and ran on to fire a high shot past the advancing keeper. 1-0.

The second goal came from the penalty spot with Callum fouled from behind and Keiran confidently converted for 2-0. Keiran was looking extremely up for this game and was doing great work up the left putting in a strong run and left foot cross that Mick hit off balance on the half volley to find the net for 3-0.

The Fulbourn keeper was performing heroics and made several good stops including saving a Mick free kick well that the boys followed in on and he managed to parry wide. Another free kick – this time taken by Keiran – sailed over the defence and this time the boys beat the offside trap and Mick bravely headed the ball by the keeper for 4-0 taking a clout for his trouble. The defence of Jonah, Joe, Kyle and Olly were tight and organised and more pleasingly started and supported the attacks with intelligent and controlled passes. Again the keeper did well against a one on one with

Jordan and the half finished at 4-0.

It was an easy half-time talk and we asked for more of the same – we switched a few positions and players leaving a bench of Mick, Keiran and Jordan, indicating what tremendous strength in depth we have this season and sent them out again.

In the second half the boys were with the wind and they adjusted quickly and continued with their fast flowing and positive football. Good work from Adam and Tommy T saw a good flick saved and a strong free-kick from Callum went just over. Rory was not to be outdone – he did well coming out strong to be adjudged to have hand-balled outside the box but dealt confidently saving the resulting Fulbourn free-kick. With both Toms upfront supported by good pressure from George on the right wing the ball fell to Foxy to execute a sublime sideways lob over the keeper for a great finish and 5-0.

Mick and Keiran put over a series of great swirling corners and Callum got on the end of a couple but others bypassed everyone when a slightest touch might have caused Fulbourn trouble. A tricky link up between Adam, Callum and Mick led to another good save by the Fulbourn goalie.

Jordan hit the bar with a lob shot and Keiran did one better lobbing the keeper expertly to get his second and the Colts’ sixth. 6-0

More good corners followed and a half cleared one was pounced on by Mick who cut inside and planted a quality shot in the net for his hat-trick and 7-0. Kyle, pushing on from the back got the team’s eighth hitting an unstoppable drive to complete the scoring. 8-0.

The game came to an end and we congratulated all the boys on a superb team performance. They were strong at the back, hard but fair in the tackles and were always looking to create moves with clever and incisive passing. They were sharp in front of goal and if it wasn’t for a great display by the Fulbourn keeper would certainly have scored more.

Man of the match went to Jake for his best performance in a Royston shirt so far, doing a great destructive AND constructive job in central midfield alongside the tireless Callum. Keiran was superb all through but overall it was the fantastic team performance we were most pleased with.
