It’s often said football is a funny old game and I think our performances of late show it to be true, full of flair with a work rate second to none one week, flat and lethargic the next. This week was no different, Golds started brightly but with no real threat, we as usual began to play 5 minutes after the first whistle.  We took the lead when Charlie continued his run of form with a powerful finish.  Unfortunately our passages of play were limited to sporadic efforts, we seemed lack lustre when not in possession with our advanced midfield players unwilling to get back into defensive positions. Letchworth began to grow in confidence, passed the ball and kept possession better than we did.  Ben tried to help by winning most headers in the centre of the park, but we failed to win the 2nd ball. The visitors then hit us with 2, quick fire goals too send us into the break trailing 1-2.

Not out of the match we started the 2nd period brightly and thought that the half time hairdryer had done the trick, but luck was not on our side, Letchworth hit us on the counter attack 1-3.

The pattern of the 1st half began to appear again with us willing to go forward but reluctant to chase back when possession was lost. Again we had chances with both Charlie and Josh hitting the post, but the game looked like it was slipping away. However we pulled a goal back when Gareth reacted quickest too a shot that the keeper saved and slotted home neatly to set up what we hoped would be a grandstand finish.

It wasn’t to be as, in our eagerness to press forward we left gaps which Letchworth exploited with two late goals.

Final score RTYFC 2 – LGCEG 5

One bad game doesn’t mean we are a bad team, you are all talented players, we have the potential to become a very good side but we must work for each other in every game, be that training or match days, we must not expect someone else to do our defensive work for us, defending isn’t just for defenders, we all have jobs to do when not in possession. Remember how defeat feels, strive to make sure you don’t have that feeling very often.
