We welcomed Fulbourn for a league match on Sunday hoping we could take our recent good form into today’s game and pick up our first league win of the season. The wind was fairly strong but not to bad and the pitch was in really good condition so not a bad day for football. We had a full squad to choose from although Eamon had not played for three weeks and both AJ and James R had slight knocks but not bad enough to stop them playing a part today.
Before the game we talked about the things that we had done well in previous matches and how that had to continue as well as our quality and decision making in the final third which at times this season has been a problem. We wanted a really fast start and Ash challenged them to score a goal in the first ten minutes to set the tone for the rest of the match.
The game started and we were very quick out of the blocks and in fact scored in the first minute only for the goal to be ruled offside, then in the second minute the ref stopped the game for a foul to us when if he had waited another second he would have seen a clear advantage as once again we scored but he pulled it back for the foul. Credit to the boys they continued to push forward and on six minutes James R found Rhys out wide he beat his marker before putting in a really dangerous cross which a Fulbourn defender turned into his own net. We did not have to wait long for number two when James R corner was headed into the net from Rhys, and with only twenty minutes on the clock the game as a contest was over when once again James R sent over a great corner which flicked off a defender to Rhys who hit an absolute wonder strike to put us three up.Fulbourn to there credit defended well for the remainder of the half although I was a little disappointed with some of our decision making in the final third as we went in 3-0 up at the break.
Plenty of positives especially how they started which really did set the tone of the game, We just wanted them to do things quicker especially when passing the ball as to often things were slowed down by us hanging on to the ball to long, but I did like the way we were patient with the ball and were not afraid to go back to keep it, all five subs came on to keep that quick pace we were playing at up.
Number four came five minutes into the second half when a move started down our right by Matt who then found James B out wide and then his deep cross was meet by Rhys to complete his hat trick, We continued to have most of the ball although on to many occasions were wasteful in possession or with the final ball into the box as well as over hitting passes which was not like us at all.Fulbourn did have a couple of half chances but nothing that really troubled Robbie in goal. We had to wait until the final five minutes for goals five and six when first a great James R free kick went in off the post after Rhys had been fouled then a move down our left which saw a pass from Jack O find Rhys his shot was saved by the keeper only for Sam to follow up and score a goal his play deserved today. Rhys picked up a booking at the end of the game which will be a lesson to him and hopefully will stop him getting involved when it’s best to just walk away.
This game was won in the first twenty minutes and although we did play some good football today I was still slightly disappointed with the overall performance which to some will seem harsh but the coaches and players all know that we were not at our best for a large part of that game today and in many ways that is a compliment to the players that they win a game 6-0 and we as a group are not satisfied.
County cup fourth round is up next and we will have to be at our best to progress but I know this group and they will be working hard at training this week to make sure we give ourselves every chance to win that game.
