Lost 1-0

We travelled the short distance to Sawston to play our penultimate league fixture; the facilities at Sawston are first class so no excuses today it really is a fabulous set up. We had more injury problems especially at the centre back position with both Jack M and Alasdair out injured as well as Richard and George so we had 12 to choose from,Sawston have had an up and down season with a mixed bag of league results but also reaching there county cup final knocking out EJA sides on the way, we new today would be tough because they are always up for the big games and today would be know different.

We talked about the importance of wining today as the league or runners up spot were still very much up for grabs, we had to make sure our decision making in all aspects of our game was spot on as there would be no or little scope for error today, the pitch was made for playing football and we reminded them about making sure we were always on the move and making ourselves available, we wanted them to close the ball down in the right areas but also make sure we relaxed on the ball.

We started the game really well and the midfield three of AJ,Bradley and James R were really passing the ball around well and there interchange play was excellent, Rhys had our first chance but his lob was not quite high enough and the keeper gathered, then form a James R corner Ross had a free header but the keeper saved well,Sawston always looked dangerous going forward and Robbie had to be alert to save down low and then there forward had a couple of long range efforts that failed to hit the target. Towards the end of the half first AJ then James R both tried there luck from distance but neither effort troubled the Sawston keeper, it was no surprise when the ref blow up for half time and it was still goalless.

The effort and work ethic with and without the ball was there for all to see we just needed that bit of creativity in the last third, concentration at the back was also important as we needed to stay focused as in tight games its all about small margins.

We started ok at the start of the second half without really being a threat and then more bad luck when Eamon who was filling in at centre back and doing a good job was forced off with a hamstring injury which meant more reshuffling at the back, both teams were really cancelling each other out with neither side having a clear cut opportunity as both defences remained on top, this really had 0-0 written all over it that was until the last minute when a good break by a Sawston midfielder down our right saw him beat off two challenges before cutting inside and hitting a shot which Robbie did well to save but as the ball broke free the same player reacted quickest and scored from close range, we had no time to get back in it and the ref blow up for time and with it not only did we lose the game but we lost the chance of the title or runners up spot.

The disappointment on all there faces was there to see but its credit to them that with only one game left we are only now out of the running to win the league, I could have been critical about the goal we conceded and the lack of chances on goal we created but that would be un fair because one thing this team has always done is given maximum effort and me maximum respect, there is know getting away from the fact as well that injuries have hampered us this season its not an excuse its true and I know all teams get them but we have had to deal with it form the first game away to Godmanchester right up to today’s game with only three or four occasions in between when I had a full squad to choose from. I have already mentioned respect and I respect each and everyone of these boys 100% they have been a credit all season with there attitude and work ethic on match days and equally at training and I knew that will continue right up to our last game.

Well done boys you should all feel proud of your contribution this season.
