The 2010/2011 league season got underway with the visit of Stotfold Juniors to the Heath on a fine, calm and dry morning. This was our first competitive 11 a side game and following our excellent pre-season programme – P5 W4 D1 and scoring a lot of goals – the boys were obviously keen to get going for real. The weather was perfect for football and our newly situated pitch looked good with an excellent playing surface, but with a slight incline for both sets of players to deal with.

The league had placed us in Division 2 for this inaugural season and we genuinely have no idea how we would do at this level of football. We had lost three influential players since last season and we were looking to our smallish squad of 14 players to compete against whatever opposition they lined up against.

Andy warmed the boys up thoroughly and we asked the boys to relax, enjoy themselves, to talk to each other and to play a quick and accurate passing game.

The game started with some obvious nervous excitement and the first few minutes were more like a game of ping pong than football.

1-0 The excellent Keiran took control of the game by threading a pass through to Bruce who opened up the scoring for the season with a firm and confident finish.
2-0 Jamie C won the ball well and passed to Jack who blasted up the wing putting in a strong shot that the keeper couldn’t hold and Mick was on hand to tap in.
3-0 Jamie P sent in a fine free kick from just inside the Stotfold half and Callum arrived perfectly to bury in the net.
4-0 Keiran’s dangerous corner was met with a brilliant glancing front post header by the alert Foxy.
5-0 Another probing through ball was seized upon by Bruce who once again made no mistake showing his clinical goal getting ability.

Half time score was 5-0 and we were obviously pleased with the start the boys had made. We changed a few personnel and positions and asked them to keep the football going.

6-0 Another Jamie P free kick was met again by a well timed run by Callum who sensibly took his time to find the net well.
7-0 A well worked short corner between Mick and Jack led to a good cross being met by Lewis who finished clinically.
8-0 Good work by Mick and the ball was passed to Jack who showed tight control on his chest releasing the ball to Jamie P who fired home.
9-0 Rory skilfully flicked the ball over the defence and Jack showed his electric pace and awareness by running on and finishing well.
10-0 Keiran sent over a perfect corner that Jamie P met solidly with a powerful header.
11-0 Mick ran onto a loose ball and finished well.
12-0 A long goal kick from Callum was picked up by Mick who again slotted home confidently.
13-0 A brilliant spin and shot from the increasingly lively Mick.

We were obviously delighted with this start to the season and congratulated all the boys on such a scintillating performance. We asked them to approach every game with the same confidence and brilliant attitude during the whole season.

We asked Duncan Easley of Specialized Security Products Limited, who had generously sponsored our new warm up tops, to present the Man of the Match award and he presented it to Tommy T for his absolute faultless performance at right back. Special mentions for the awesome Matt, the brilliant JP, the rock solid JC and the resilience and skill of Joe.

Team Rory, Joe, JC, JP, Tom T, Keiran, Callum, Matt, Jack, Mick, Bruce, Tom F, Lewis.
